My Story

I remember the first time I held my little boy, overwhelmed by how perfect he was and committed to do everything in my power to support him on his path. I wanted to do right by him; I wanted to be a good mother.

He was always a happy boy. He was always moving, very vocal and full of personality! Between his zesty determination to explore the world and my over-enthusiastic mothering, we found ourselves at odds much more frequently that I would have hoped. Each day, I couldn’t help but feel like I could have done better, or that maybe I was missing something.

A few years later, I found myself holding my little girl. She was more quietly curious and incredibly independent. My children’s polarity catalysed my quest to find a manner of parenting that flowed better with both my children’s energies and resonated well with my personal beliefs about childhood.

It was during this time that the Montessori Method found me; I was reading a parenting book (as all parents do when they feel they have reached a dead-end!). From that point on, I just could not stop researching! The more I learned, the more I was desperate to know. I suddenly felt like I had found an instruction manual to parenting my little ones. I became a more confident, creative and considerate parent and simultaneously, my children were growing into confident, creative and considerate individuals. (continued below…)

“Every day and in every way, the little child is a completely new version of the time before. This little one is changed by the previous experience!”

My little ones thrived as I practiced Dr. Montessori’s method of sensitive parenting and positive discipline. My relationship with my son became one of calm co-existence. I began to rejoice in his childhood, instead of somewhat urging him to grow out of difficult stages. As my little girl began to grow, I felt so much more in sync with her needs. We developed a dynamic relationship and negotiated with each other as she grew into a true Montessori Baby.

It was then that I took it upon myself to begin my formal Montessori education. After realizing I had exhausted all the resources at my immediate disposal, I began learning at Montessori Center International in London, UK. I have expanded my education to include infancy through early elementary years.

I have committed myself to maintaining my understanding of both parenting and teaching practices through engaging with new research as well as interacting with parents and teachers who have their eyes and ears on the ground. I can say with certainty that working with children is what I was destined for.

In 2007, I was fortunate enough to found Explorers Schools in Ghana. Six years later, I still cannot believe my luck - to live and learn amongst such bright, kind and passionate little ones has been the adventure of a lifetime. Our 'Baby Explorers programme is designed for infants, and I simply cannot wait to watch generations of Montessori Babies take over the world!
